All paper banks in Midlothian will be removed this month

Due to a drop in the volume of material recovered from paper banks, coupled with a deterioration in the quality of materials recovered, it is now no longer viable for Midlothian Council’s contractor to continue to offer a paper bank recycling service.

Actions for residents

Once the banks are removed, residents are asked not to leave bags of paper/card in the car parks of community facilities where the banks were sited. It will not be collected for recycling as it will be regarded as flytipping.

Alternative options for disposal

  • Residents can recycle all clean and dry paper, card and cardboard in their blue recycling bin. Larger blue bins are available on request by calling 0131 561 5284.
  • Banks which accept mixed dry recycling, which are mainly situated at major supermarkets, may also accept paper and card.
  • Larger items of cardboard can be recycled at our two Household Waste Recycling Centres.
  • Shredded paper can be placed in blue bins as long as it is securely contained within a clear plastic bag (tied securely to reduce windblown litter and clear so that it can be identified and removed from the other materials).
