Council unable to offer Saltersgate summer school

Not enough qualified and skilled staff to run the summer school

Midlothian Council is contacting families who requested a placement on the summer programme at Saltersgate to inform them that, despite its best efforts, it will not be possible to run the summer school due to a lack of qualified and skilled staff.

Families being contacted to discuss options

The council’s Head of Children’s Services, Joan Tranent said she was very disappointed and she acknowledged parents and carers would be extremely anxious. She said children and families practitioners from children’s services shall make contact with all families concerned over the next few days to advise them of alternative options available within the community.

A letter has been sent to the families

In a letter to the families, Ms Tranent writes: “Over the past month we have endured a great deal of challenges in trying to secure a group of suitably trained staff to commit to the identified dates.  Unfortunately at this time we have been unable to recruit the required number of highly trained staff.   Therefore it is with deep regret that I write to inform you that, despite our best efforts, we are unable to run the summer school programme at Saltersgate.

We acknowledge this is an anxious time

“I appreciate and acknowledge that this will be an anxious time for many parents/carers and therefore have arranged for a children and families practitioner to make contact with you over the next few days to discuss what alternative options are available.”

No agency has tendered for the contract

The play scheme was previously run by Capability Scotland. It withdrew from the contract last year and, despite putting the contract out for tender, no other agency has come forward.

At Easter, the council ran a short programme

At Easter, the council managed to run a short programme for a limited amount of children with complex needs. However it has not been possible to get a larger group of skilled staff to commit over the summer.
