Crowdfund Scotland coming to Midlothian

A partnership between the UK’s number one rewards crowdfunding platform, Crowdfunder, and the Scottish LEADER programme will see organisations across Midlothian receive help to turn their ideas into reality.

Support for rural communities

LEADER, which is part-funded by the Scottish Government and European Union, delivers support to remote and rural communities and business networks. This latest initiative is the result of a two-year partnership with Crowdfund Scotland to provide coaching and support for projects in nine LEADER areas, including Tyne Esk which covers Midlothian and East Lothian.

Crowdfunding projects

Crowdfunding is a way of raising money from the crowd around you. You ask the crowd to support your idea with pledges of money in return for rewards. Projects also have funding partners, including more than 25 local authorities, and businesses such as Santander, Virgin and M&S, who offer grants and further support.

Local workshops and advice

The new programme is currently recruiting four full-time coaches and one part time coach who will deliver a mix of local workshops and expert one-to-one coaching. A Crowdfund Scotland portal will also launch on the Crowdfunder platform, featuring crowdfunding LEADER projects and providing information about funding, workshops and support.

Accessible to all

The project aims to make crowdfunding accessible to all organisations who want to fundraise and is intended as a viable option to replace funding streams lost through Brexit.

Welcome news

Anne Hastie, Vice Chair of Tyne Esk LEADER, welcomed the news of the launch. “Tyne Esk recognised that this co-operation project would provide a great opportunity to support projects in remote and rural areas of Scotland. Crowdfunding from the community – another ‘bottom up’ approach - offers an alternative to direct grants from funders which has become more and more challenging, particularly for small community groups and charities.”

Making ideas happen

Rob Love, Chief Executive, Crowdfunder added: “We are delighted to be launching Crowdfund Scotland with Scottish LEADER. Crowdfunder’s mission is to tackle society’s challenges by making ideas happen. We look forward to helping some Scottish ideas that might just change the world.”

2019 launch

Crowdfund Scotland will launch early in 2019, although the coaching programme will begin this month.
