Staff pull together to make a difference

Volunteers help out at Highbank

Volunteers Marni McCann, Allan Blair and Dee Kiernan

These three smiling faces are just some of the volunteers who have left their normal 9-5 and stepped into frontline social care services.

Supporting the team at Highbank

Meet Marni, Allan and Dee - from our Sport and Leisure and Children’s Services teams - who are now supporting the work of the wonderful team at Highbank Intermediate Care. They are just three of 23 council employees who have stepped up, and out of their comfort zone, to help some of our most vulnerable residents.

Happy to contribute

Allan Blair, a Sport and Physical Activity team leader, says the staff at Highbank are fantastic, and really supportive. “The care they give some of the most vulnerable people is incredible and is even more amazing given the current situation they are working in. I feel really humbled to have the opportunity to work with them and contribute in some small way.”

It's good to feel useful

Marnie McCann, one of our Leisure Assistants at Danderhall, agrees. “I’m really enjoying working at Highbank, it’s good to feel useful, especially with COVID affecting so many. I can now appreciate how much hard work it is, and can see that the carers do not get enough appreciation for what they do.”

Care workers do an incredible job

Dee Kiernan also put her hand up to volunteer. The role is night and day compared to her usual job as Planning Policy and Project Officer (Big Lottery Mental Health) but she’s really enjoying the experience. “I’ve come to appreciate how challenging working as a care worker is. I hope when this is all over, carers will be better recognised for the work they do.”

Pulling together to make a difference

Katherine Malone, Manager at Highbank Intermediate Care, says she can’t thank these staff enough for everything they are doing to make a difference. “It just means so much to the staff at Highbank that people are coming out of the a job they know so well to help us continue to provide an important service. It is such a challenging and scary time for everyone and the fact that this has not put people off helping is so appreciated.”

Thank you

A huge thanks to all staff who have stepped out of their comfort zone, taken off one job hat and put on another. And the people who help them do it. We can’t thank you enough.
