Public consultation on council’s plans to set up a register of Common Good Property

A public consultation is now open on the council’s plans to set up a register of Common Good Property in Midlothian.

Assets and income

Common Good Funds in Scotland originated in the 15th century and are the assets and income of some former burghs. They represent a portfolio of land, property and investments that continue to exist for the common good of the local people who live there.

Former burghs

Midlothian Council is successor authority to four former burghs: Bonnyrigg and Lasswade, Dalkeith, Loanhead and Penicuik. The Midlothian register is currently limited to money held in the Common Good funds for Dalkeith and Penicuik, amounting to £7,000 and £2,000 respectively.
