Foundation Apprenticeships

Foundation Apprenticeship Q&A's

What is the difference between a Foundation Apprenticeship and a Modern Apprenticeship?

Foundation Apprenticeships are part of the S5 students' school timetable. Modern Apprenticeships are jobs with structured training, paid by an employer. So, Modern Apprentices can't stay at school whilst training.

What are the entry requirements?

Foundation Apprenticeships will be available to all S5 students in Midlothian. You will need to be ready for working and studying at SCQF Level 6 (Higher equivalent), but in a vocational setting. The specific entry requirements will vary depending on which subject you choose. See the individual courses in the next section for details.

What qualification can I obtain?

You'll gain a Foundation Apprenticeship in a specific subject. This will be the same level of learning as an SQA Higher (SCQF Level 6). Attainment will be measured by ongoing assessment throughout a work placement.

What can I do with my qualification?

Your Foundation Apprenticeship gives you lots of options. It’s up to you where you go next:

  • Modern Apprenticeship
  • Further Education
  • University
  • Straight to a job.

Where will the qualification be delivered?

Foundation Apprenticeships will be delivered at different venues in Midlothian, depending on your subject.
