First refugees arrive in Midlothian
A spokesman said: “We can confirm that 10 refugees, including two families with children, have arrived in Midlothian.
“Suitable council housing has been found for them, as required under homeless regulations. We are working with partner agencies, including the NHS, police, the central mosque Edinburgh, other churches and voluntary groups to make sure they are settling in and can access health care, schools etc.
“We are aware that, as they are among those listed by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees for immediate resettlement, they are the most vulnerable and traumatised individuals. We are therefore, protecting their privacy as they begin their new lives in Midlothian.
“That said, local residents have so far been welcoming, on the whole. If local people want to help further they can donate clothing, toiletries and school supplies for refugees still in European camps, as part of our MidAid initiative.”
Further details of the MidAid initiative, including where to donate, can be found on the council website at www.midlothian.gov.uk/midaid
