Design proposal 3
Site Analysis
The site is covered by a variety of existing constraints which will inform and govern the siting of the new community campus as outlined below:
Constraints
- Two access points to site facilitating potential for clear division for construction traffic and access.
- Existing walking paths on western edge can be used for pedestrian access.
- Potential acoustic / privacy issues along the western edge to be considered due to existing buildings within the neighbouring Midlothian Innovation Centre.
- Existing sewer route to be considered.
- Careful consideration to be given to existing site levels and impact on the flood plain.
Opportunities
- Large unobstructed area available centrally for site planning.
- Potential for consideration on west-east axis.
- Mature tree line around three edges of the site with the potential to enhance the Learning Landscape.
- Opportunities for views to the Pentland Hills to the North.

The site is zoned so as to provide a variety of settings in addition to the typical educational areas associated with the project:
- 106 m x 74m 3G football pitch located adjacent to the school
- 2No 50m x 85m (Size 2) Rugby pitches located on the east site
- 60m x 100m football pitch located on the east site
- Outdoor Classrooms within the landscape
- Outdoor Dining Areas adjacent to the indoor dining areas
- Nature Walk which incorporates the sites existing mature tree belt
Main vehicular access to the site is taken from Seafield Moor Road with a secondary access point for emergency / maintenance vehicles taken from Seafield Road.
The main pedestrian and cycle approach is taken from the junction with Seafield Road to the north and also Seafield Moor Road to the south east. Both are joined by a route that meanders down the eastern side of the site.
The proposals allow for a bus turning circle within the site that can accommodate 4 bays to facilitate drop off, whilst a car park is located to the southern portion of the site and will accommodate staff and visitors to the building. Accessible parking bays are also provided adjacent to the buildings main entrance.
