Housing options for older people

Living at home

We recognise that for a lot of people, your favourite option would be to stay at home, even if your care needs change. We offer a wide range of support, whether aids and adaptations, a telecare package or home care, to help you live safely and securely at home.

Sheltered housing

Sheltered housing tenancies are specifically for older people, usually over 60. The housing tends to be in a scheme of about 20 to 40 self contained flats or bungalows. There is usually an alarm system and most schemes have a scheme manager. There are usually communal areas such as shared lounge, laundry and garden.

Extra care housing

Extra care housing accommodates older people with various levels of care and support needs, by providing dedicated staff on site.

Specialist housing for rent

There is specialist housing for rent throughout Midlothian, with different levels of support, either through the Council or a Housing Association:

We recognise there may be a time you need to move into a care home.
