Community councils

Your local Community Council

Community councils are voluntary organisations that acts as a voice for their local area. They represent the views of their local community to the local authority and other public bodies.

Members are volunteers who are democratically elected. Community Council meetings are generally open to all members of the public, although the public may only participate and speak at meetings if invited to do so.

Community Councils may

• be consulted on planning and licensing applications within their area.
• carry out activities that are in the general interest of the communities they represent, including safeguarding and improving the amenities and environment in their area.
• campaign to raise awareness of specific local issues. 
• hold public meetings or carry out surveys to find out the view of the community on specific issues;
• produce a newsletter or website to promote local activities
• arrange community events such as gala days, environmental clean-ups and improving facilities for young people in the community.

The Midlothian Federation of Community Councils is a Midlothian wide group that includes representatives of all 15 local community councils.
