Adapt your home for disability

Kitchen

We will modify your kitchen if you use a wheelchair and/or have substantial and permanent mobility problems and your kitchen is not suitable for your needs.

The homeowner/landlord must give permission for any adaptation.

Maintenance, removal and making good of adaptations are the responsibility of the homeowner/landlord.

To request a repair to a Midlothian Council property please contact the Housing Team.

If you only use the kitchen minimally we will ensure you can access the kitchen and one work surface. If you are the main user of the kitchen we will ensure you can access the sink, oven, hob and one work surface.

  • We will reuse/adapt existing kitchen units where possible.
  • We may fit accessible overhead units if we cannot resite white goods or utensils lower down.
  • We will fit a splash guard around the sink and cooker using the most cost effective option. If you would like a more expensive option you will need to pay the difference in cost.
  • We will only support mechanical devices to raise and lower kitchen surfaces when all other options have been explored and there are other people, who are the main user of the kitchen, that require a different height of kitchen surface.
  • We will not cover the cost of replacing white goods or domestic appliances.
  • We will not adapt a kitchen to manage safety or behavioural needs.
